The purpose of this study is to compare the cost and performance of small community alternative filtration technologies. There are several alternatives to conventional treatment that may be more suitable for use by small communities. Research being performed at the USEPA Test & Evaluation Facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, is evaluating several different filtration technologies for not only removal of currently regulated contaminants, but also Cryptosporidium surrogates. These package plant systems include bag filters, cartridge filters, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration membranes. Performance evaluations include capital and operation cost and ease of operation and maintenance. Potential Cryptosporidium surrogates such as polystyrene beads, particle counting, and turbidity were examined across the various filtration systems.
