This paper presents various means which can be utilized to remove radon from groundwaters, including: air stripping towers, diffused air systems, cascade tray aerators, and spray jet aerators. It addresses significant items which must be considered in the design of radon removal facilities, including: multi-media impacts, increased well pump head requirements, aeration system maintenance considerations, air requirements, and the need to provide additional pumps for the delivery of treated flows to the distribution system. This paper will conclude by discussing the modular design concept which was developed by the American Water Works Service Company and enhanced by Montgomery Watson and American to standardize new water treatment facilities for Pennsylvania-American Water Company and other American subsidiary companies.
