The purpose of this paper is to present an historical picture of the occurrences of total coliform and E. coli bacteria in New York City's distribution system. An evaluation of the possible sources of the total coliform and E. coli bacteria will also be presented. This evaluation will focus on the Hillview Reservoir and distribution system biofilm as possible sources of bacteria. The determination of coliform bacterial species, and E. coli serotyping will also be discussed.
