The Santa Clara Valley Water District (District) will be significantly affected by the new regulations of the 1996 Amendments of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Evaluation of historical water quality data shows that the District will need to modify operating practices at its three treatment plants to comply with the new, more stringent disinfection byproducts (DBP) control requirements on a consistent basis. This paper presents the results of the District's experiences with total organic carbon and DBPs, the pilot study testing for strategies to reduce DBPs, and potential problems and solutions to process changes required for DBP reduction.
