Slow sand filtration is a simple and reliable process that is highly effective for removal of particulate matter from drinking water. Studies and operating experience have demonstrated greater than 3-log removal of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts. This paper presents a case study of a 72-year-old slow sand filtration plant facing the challenges of aging infrastructure and increasing regulatory requirements.
