The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) has over 550 kilometers of trunk water mains, the majority of which are lined with coal tar enamel. New Mains continued to be lined with coal tar enamel by the GVRD until 1996. GVRD's Medical Health Officer supported the decision to discontinue the use of coal tar enamel and numerous North American cities were canvassed to document the water main lining materials used. While cement mortar lining was the most predominant, the use of dielectric lining material was thought to be the most appropriate for the GVRD mainly for water quality, environmental, constructability and seismic design concern. From the several dielectric lining materials available, high performance AWWA C210 liquid epoxy was selected and used on the 10 kilometer, 1500 mm (60-inch) diameter South Burnaby Main No.2. While factory lining application can generally be completed in controlled environmental conditions, field application presents numerous challenges, particularly in high rainfall and cooler climates. The GVRD developed systems to control application conditions and coordinate the lining portion of the work with safety issues and the pipe installation front. Several lessons were learned through completion of water main installation and a monitoring program will be continued to further assess the epoxy lining performance.
