This paper presents a non-technical discussion of selected nonpoint source (NPS) pollutants that may affect surface drinking water supplies in the Midwest, where there are geographic factors and unique land use that need to be considered in source water protection. By observing the watershed projects that succeed and those that fail, it is apparent that long-term water resource management has to include a holistic or systemic approach to pollutant reduction.
