A complete model, based on a balance between transport, settling, resuspension and generation of particles was developed. A first validation was carried out in a pilot distribution system, where controlled injections of particles were realized under various hydraulic conditions. This system of equations was developed as an excel macro capable of treating data from various hydraulic models. This tool simulates the fouling of networks and the potential discolored water events (fire exercise, high consumption period, works, valve maneuver...). A good correlation is obtained with the results of the sampling campaigns organized in two distribution systems. The model diagnoses the most penalizing pipes in terms of risk of turbid events and puts forward an optimized strategy for preventive flushing. This strategy aims at targeting the most critical pipes and at giving an ideal flushing time. A lower number of interventions on the network and the decrease of water wasted to flush the system induces a higher effectiveness of such network maintenance.
