The purpose of this paper is to attempt to identify possible sources of contamination by Cryptosporidium and Giardia of the source waters that are used by Sydney Water. In order to prepare this paper an examination of the catchment area for Lake Burragorang and Cataract Dam was undertaken, and estimates of the contamination potential were made. A short-term investigation was made that examined the contamination problem from a whole catchment basin perspective. This investigation was limited to contamination by Cryptosporidium and Giardia and was based upon currently available data and readily available knowledge bases and modeling tools.
