Although currently not required to comply with any Safe Drinking Water Act regulations for Disinfection Byproducts, the newly promulgated Stage 1 Disinfection Byproducts rule will affect public water systems which serve water to fewer than 10,000 people. Some preliminary data suggest that more than half of these smaller systems will need to modify their current treatment process in order to comply with this new regulation. Several options are available to mitigate concentrations of Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids within the distribution sytem, and managers and operators of small systems are encouraged to begin evaluating their treatment process now to determine whether modifications and capital expenditures will soon be necessary.
