In 1998, the City of Austin initiated a Rainwater Harvesting Incentive program to provide visibility and increased awareness of the opportunity that rainwater harvesting provides for conserving drinking water supplies during the summer months. This program is one of the initiatives that Austin has launched to reduce peak day usage by 10 percent by the Year 2005, which will delay construction of additional water plant capacity. This paper discusses the three parts of the Rainwater Program: demonstration sites; rainwater incentives for all customers; and, a rainbarrel rebate.
