In 1997, the Missouri-American Water Company installed a 36 inch horizontal directional drilled (HDD) crossing of the Missouri River and adjacent flood ways in order to derive an additional source of supply from the City of St. Louis for its St. Charles county service area. The project provided significant and immediate water supply benefits to the Water Company's customers. At a total length of 4,692 feet, the project challenges also provided vauable insight from an owner's and engineer's perspective on the applications and advantages of using HDD construction methods. Using the Missouri-American project case study, the objectives of this paper are to: provide an overview of HDD water main design and construction considerations; review the advantages of HDD contruction; and, review typical HDD costs.
