The objective of this study was to develop an alternative tool to quickly and easily evaluate the remaining life of granular activated carbon (GAC) for mitigation of a taste and odor episode. The tool should determine how effluent concentrations of taste and odor causing compounds change as influent concentrations change. This tool should also provide the information necessary to determine if the GAC is currently effective and if it will last through an impending taste and odor season, or if it is sufficiently spent to require regeneration or replacement. The concentration of methylisoborneol (MIB) was monitored across a variety of laboratory and pilot scale GAC columns. By altering either design or operational conditions, different columns provided data on the effects of natural organic matter, preloading time, flow rate, bed depth, column diameter, particle size, influent concentration, and chlorine/carbon reaction on GAC performance. These were used to assess how well the laboratory columns could simulate larger scale systems, and to evaluate how changes in these conditions might effect the removal of MIB.
