The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a coagulation/settling step prior to the ultrafiltration (UF) process in terms of both UF operating performances and treated water quality. A comparison was made between this combination and direct UF of a surface water from both a technical and an economic point of view. Preliminary bench-scale testing was performed to compare four coagulants: ferric chloride; ferric sulfate; aluminum chloride; and, aluminum sulfate. The pilot study was conducted on the surface water of the River Seine in the western suburbs of Paris where the raw water quality is subject to drastic changes. Raw, settled, and treated water quality were evaluated by taking sample for turbidity, dissolved organic carbon, and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm. A schematic diagram of the pilot plant is given. Operating conditions were summarized respectively for coagulation/sedimentation step and UF step.
