Between 1996 and 1998, the Water Resources Bureau in the Republic of Chinasponsored some twenty public schools in a pilot program to improve their water use efficiency. These schools were required to install flow restrictors for faucets, dual-flush-toilet conversion kits, wastewater reusing system, and/or rainwater utilitzation system. This paper used multicriteria to evaluate the successfulness of the pilot program. The criteria included actual water consumption, users' satisfaction with the water devices and with the conservation policies of the schools, and students' and their parents' awareness of water issues. On the basis of these criteria, the sponsored schools were compared to nonsponsored schools. Problems in finding comparable nonsponsored schools and in promoting the pilot program were also discussed. Includes 2 references, tables.
