Based on survey results, review of outdoor water management programsimplemented by other water utilities, and discussions with irrigation and turf maintenance contractors, United Water Resources (Company) decided to pursue two initiatives to try to dampen, and shift the peak water use pattern in the Franklin Lakes system. First, the Company began to promote a voluntary three-day watering cycle for all residential customers. This program was modeled after the program in Denver, Colorado. Each address was assigned a one-in-three day water cycle based on the last two digits of the customer's address; the Company developed a calendar for the summer lawn watering season based on these cycles. This calendar was included in a mailing that also included basic lawn watering and water conservation tips. The second element of the program was lawn-watering audits, designed to educate customers on proper lawn watering techniques and sprinkler system operation. Includes figure.
