This paper gives a basic introduction to geographic information systems (GIS) in its use as a help to maintenance management. Preventive and unscheduled maintenance activities need to be scheduled; a list of maintenance activities is given. The maintenance management system should provide cross referencing between mainline structures and street addresses. As either preventive or unscheduled maintenance tasks are completed, information should be automatically transferred to history files. Comprehensive stockroom inventory functions should be cross referenced for spare parts and integrated with work order processing capabilities. Two case studies are given. The first involves a sewer inspection system using videotape interfaced with a computer analysis program; when inspecting the sewer the operator sees something that should be recorded, he/she presses a coded key on the keyboard to record the observation. A special keyboard eliminates the need to type; keys are coded to match observations. In the second case study, a simulation model is integrated to the GIS.
