The Compagnie Generale des Eaux Group owns water supply systems ranging in size from 100 inhabitants to more than 4 million. Small systems in rural areas often require no more than standard, low-cost, remote control of the water works. The continuously falling prices of electronics and computers has made remote control accessible to rural areas and data processing is now more equally shared between the control center and outstations in the water works. For a number of reasons that are outlined early in the paper, the Compagnie Generale des Eaux decided to develop its own software for remote control of water works. This paper describes the software, which runs under Unix in 40 different control systems. A functional description of the software is given in some detail. Remote control of one drinking water and one wastewater system are described in terms of hardware and applications.
