The objective of this paper is to examine the design of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The use of microcomputers allowed development of a LIMS at a reasonable cost. The author offers an overview of LIMS, beginning with a definition and reasons for developing such a system. The design process then begins with identification of LIMS requirements: log-in, data entry, work sheet generation, data review, data editing and viewing, and report generation. Administrative requirements include user-friendliness, online help, data validation, and security. The software used is the commercially available Advanced Revelation; major features are described in some detail. The final design was arrived at through trial and error and common sense.
