In the City of Arlington, Texas, two software systems have been installed for use with the operation of the water distribution system: an integrated database management system designed to facilitate modeling and an expert system designed to facilitate system operations. Both the database and the expert system provide some intriguing possibilities, most notably the exchanging of demand and pump operation information. The core of the integrated database system is a relational database that serves as the key link between the other system components: the KYPIPE model, AutoCAD graphics, the contouring program, and the database manager. The second system, the expert system, has the primary responsibility to analyze real-time data on system demands and evaluate and recommend the most efficient mode of operation of all pumps and storage facilities. The expert system feeds information on system demands back to the database for use in network modeling.
