Each year, water and wastewater utilities invest millions of dollars in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), process control, and other operations monitoring systems. Since 1984, CSR, Inc., has contacted more than 2,360 of the largest of these utilities throughout the United States and Canada to identify companies with existing automated control systems or planned system projects. Many smaller utilities are also sampled each year to obtain information on their plans for computerized controls. This information is stored in a database for later analysis. This paper will take a close look into the combined SCADA/process control market. In addition, the results of CSR's 1992 water/wastewater study will be presented in summary. The paper will also present market trends related to computerized control systems in the water/wastewater industry. The analysis will cover growth patterns in the controls industry and the use of automated controls in large vs. small utilities.
