The availability of Multiple Address Radio Systems (MARS) radio data channels has been a boon to the design and implementation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. A license gives the licensee exclusive and protected access to a radio channel capable of handling high speed data communications with, in many cases, lower overall costs and with higher reliability than alternate means of data communications. But fitting your applications into a "real world" situation can be problematic. This paper discusses the basics of designing a MARS system, including problems that may be encountered and their solutions. Appendices includes a list of vendors for MAR, an example of an economic analysis comparing leased telephone lines with MARS, a brief look at RF System analysis (which has to do with loss of signal over distance), and a brief explanation of the protocols for MAR systems. Two example designs are given, one using a remote master and the other using separate communications masters.
