Once a customer service request is received by a city or municipal utility, field crews must rely on several sources of information to do their jobs. Prior work orders, as-built maps, atlas drawings, field sketches, operations & maintenance service manuals, spare parts catalogs, inspection forms, and historical equipment records, must be reviewed to ensure that proper corrective actions are taken in accordance with industry accepted practices. Municipal utilities are harnessing the power, user-friendliness, and data portability of pen-based computers to help streamline reporting and eliminate office data entry. The following paper discusses how pen-based computers are able to integrate work orders, sketches, and digital maps to provide a comprehensive Field GIS capability.
