The San Jose Water Company (SJWC) is developing automated systems to evaluate daily distribution system maintenance and long term main replacement and rehabilitation. The annual cost of leak repair both financially, and in terms of customer satisfaction, is related tot he annual cost of rehabilitation and replacement. A carefully considered combination of rehabilitation and main replacement options with maintenance will lead to a more efficient and less costly operation, however, more rigorous data management will be necessary. Development of the maintenance manager database and a main replacement planning program are expected to allow for more accurate assessments of main replacement needs and enable more reliable long range planning. Details of the database and planning program are discussed in this paper.
