Large, complex models can be used to accurately represent both hydraulic and conservative substances in a mixed trunk and distribution pipeline system, providing valuable knowledge about the variation of nitrate concentrations. A small number of Automatic Liquid Filtration Instruments (ALFIs) are able to automate what would otherwise be a labor intensive sampling technique and provide an accurate and cost effective method for determining nitrate levels within distribution, although they still need some time and resources to locate. However, if a good, well calibrated hydraulic model is available, nitrate blending will be accurately predicted by the SWS software if reliable source water concentration data can be obtained, making the need for a separate water quality field test unnecessary.
