Clearly Geographic Information Systems (GIS) functionality is no longer confined to the office. GIS brings map visualization in a portable format and easy-to-use interface to the emerging Global positioning system (GPS)/GIS market. GIS can display field data on any map base, whether it be an aerial photo or satellite image, coverages or CAD drawing. GIS can query and edit tabular information field map features and accepts GPS data in several ways and can communicate via IAC with GPS receivers. This portable GIS integrates well with other technologies and streamlines field tasks where field crews map, inventory, and monitor resources. Through its open system architecture and communication links, GIS links the power of satellite GPS with central databases and brings spatial analysis to people who work beyond that office. Field data collection, and, consequently, the applications that data serve may never be the same.
