Much has been written in recent years about the water industry's need to adopt more efficient operating and maintenance practices to save money, stave off the threat of privatization, or in an effort to "reengineer" their organizations. Information management and increased automation have typically been promoted in these situations as the foundation for these efforts. Even the most sophisticated automation or management system cannot compensate for inaccurate or incomplete information. Until now, the cost of designing, installing, and maintaining the necessary field instruments and devices to obtain complete and reliable data has stunted utility efforts to gain an advantage in the information age. Fieldbus offers an opportunity to substantially reduce the effort and cost involved in acquiring comprehensive and reliable information that will allow the promise of automation and information management to be realized. The water industry is uniquely positioned to reap significant benefits from Fieldbus as it emerges from the committees and designers into the world of usable technology.
