The ability to effectively assimilate and analyze the vast quantities of data which are available to us in today's society is an important factor for effective management. In the water industry managers require efficient access to decision support systems, which operate on up-to-date and relevant data concerning their assets, for the planning and operation of their water supply systems. Recent software developments have provided the tools to integrate information systems with management functions. Any such information system should possess the following characteristics: the ability to combine data from various sources (planning, operations, legal, social, economic, political, etc.) through the adoption of a standard interface; rapid access to up-to-date and relevant data; the ability to analyze data to produce information to meet management needs; ease of maintenance and flexibility so that it can be used by different categories of users; and the ability to be upgraded as new data becomes available or management requirements evolve. This paper describes the development of an asset database, and offers observations on the methodology adopted. The database was used to construct a network model of a water distribution system and subsequently, using both hydraulic and pipe condition data, provide details for the preparation of a Rehabilitation Requirements Report which scoped, quantified and costed the rehabilitation works of this water distribution system.
