The Long Beach Water Department is in the process of a 24-month geographic information systems (GIS) database development project for facilities management of its city-wide potable water, reclaimed water and sewer systems. The project objectives described in this paper are: to develop an accurate and easily accessible graphic and non-graphic database of the infrastructure network; to facilitate infrastructure planning with access, display, spatial and statistical analysis of all related information; and to improve management of the infrastructure system through better distribution of data, and optimize maintenance scheduling by minimizing unscheduled maintenance and emergency.
