This paper provides an overview of plastic pipe/infrastructure materials researchprojects funded by the Awwa Research Foundation (AwwaRF). The infrastructure, especially pipelines, is the most expensive component of a water supply system. Inthe past two decades, AwwaRF has been extensively funding research activitiesrelated to pipe materials. Research has been conducted on the long-term performance ofplastic pipes and components, including Polyethylene (PE) and Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC). A pipe materials selection manual has been developed to give utilities avaluable new tool to aid in the decision-making process for selecting pipe materials.Several new pipe material-related research projects are being considered for fundingopportunities in 2004. By funding research and providing valuable researchknowledge to the drinking water community, AwwaRF has been advancing thescience of water to improve the quality of life. Includes 7 references.
