To serve potable water to a planned large industrial development, the City ofRichardson, Texas, has installed approximately 1,550 linear-ft (lf) of 16-inch diameter water line to date.During the writing of this paper, approximately 200 lf of pipe had yet to be installed, to completeinstallation of the 1,750 lf water line. The only feasible route for the new water line was in thecenter of a 6-lane divided, major thoroughfare. Installation by open cut construction required thatthe concrete curb and a portion of one traffic lane be removed and replaced, and also the use ofa 231 lf steel bore and encasement for a road crossing. In addition, due to heavy volumes oftraffic, construction was restricted to the hours of 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. In order to minimizeindirect social costs such as the impact on traffic and ultimate hindrance to businesses in thearea, as well as noise, pollution, and damage to adjacent structures, items that are not taken intoaccount in the initial cost of construction, installation of the water line via trenchless methods(directional drilling) was specified as an alternate, using restrained-joint PVC pipe (either FusiblePV™ or CertaLok™). The project is being completed using Fusible C-90™ PVC pipe byhorizontal directional drilling (HDD). This was the City's first experience with the use of Fusible C-90™ and installation of a municipal water pipeline using trenchless technology. Includes 6 references, table, figures.
