This paper provides details of an innovative solution that was utilized for DallasWater Utilities to overcome communication redundancy limitations. This solution, developed through a multiple firm effort, includes a ring topology on a Modbus serialnetwork that allows Modbus command messages to be transferred to all devices on thenetwork ring in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. An intriguing benefitgained from this solution is that a cable break is readily identified as each device reportsthe direction in which it is receiving commands. This paper presents a case studydetailing the initial criteria for the design, a discussion of the challenges in developingthis solution, and the advantages gained subsequent to its implementation. Includes table, figures.
