As new regulations drive utilities to look more closely at the water quality in their distributionsystems, new strategies and approaches must be used to evaluate and maintain high quality waterfrom the source at the treatment plant throughout the entire distribution system. This paperaddresses the emerging focus on distribution system water quality, and provides the drivers forthis focus including security issues and regulatory changes. The tools necessary to evaluatewater quality in the pipe network are also discussed, including monitoring approaches as well asmodeling programs. Specific approaches and techniques for improving water quality arepresented, including storage tank mixing and other new technologies for the distribution system. The value of this approach is discussed, along with the benefits that utilities will receivefrom putting an emphasis on maintaining high quality water from the source to the tap. Includes 5 references.
