The Portland Water Bureau feels that there were tangible and intangible benefits from its leak detection program. The Water Bureau discovered that there is reasonably good technology available to perform a leak detection survey. Existing technology is readily adaptable to agency personnel with adequate training. They have identified leakage trends such as specific areas, soil types, and pipe materials that are problems, and can now assess the overall condition of their system. A significant amount of leaks have been repaired that may never have been discovered otherwise, and actual leakage figures have been determined to confirm the estimates made from the water audit.
