This paper discusses DC stray current problems from the early transit systems in the United States to the present day. It highlights what causes stray current problems, discusses the magnitude of the problems both from a metal loss and a financial loss standpoint. Construction practices for transit systems are set forth in hopes that water utility personnel can become familiar with the transit systems. Information is given to enable utility personnel to anticipate situations which could result in increasing or decreasing the level of stray DC currents. A minimum action plan has been set forth for water utilities along with discussion of various methods to mitigate stray current.
