This paper explores the options faced by the municipality or engineer for selecting the best system for installing or rehabilitating water mains. The trenchless options for a project are presented, along with brief descriptions of the equipment. It is beyond the scope of this paper to provide design criteria for installation or rehabilitation. For more detailed information on the described equipment, a reading list is provided at the end of the paper. The author covers three topics: new installations, placing a new pipe on or within an old line; and renovation. Each is discussed in some detail, and then information on costs is offered. Figures give detailed choices for each option; a table lists variables affecting the selection and use of a trenchless technology. A second table lists the typical applications, type of conduit installed, typical ranges, and cost, for a number of trenchless techniques, including rotary/directional drilling, pipe jacking, auger boring, and others.
