Like most other British water companies, the North East Water utility's bitumen-coated cast iron systems are old. The pipes, although structurally sound, suffer little attack from the soil but corrode internally. To stop this problem, the utility embarked on a vast system renewal program involving cement and epoxy relining. This paper discusses the program. First is discussed the choice of relining material, a list of several parameters that are monitored to create a preliminary diagnosis of pipe problem areas, preparatory cleaning of pipes, and the rehabilitation work. Further discussion is devoted to the economic choice between epoxy and cement lining, including an experiment involving the two types of lining. Not only was epoxy lining less expensive, but it was more easily used in smaller diameter pipes with sharp bends and ferrules. A summary of costs is given.
