In addition to being safe to drink, customers expect their water to be aesthetically acceptable. Discolored water, including staining of laundry, is probably one of the greatest single causes of customer complaint and, when combined with related corrosion issues in iron mains, they form one of the largest single justifications of expenditure for upgrading existing water mains. This paper outlines some novel and justifiable approaches for homing in on the exact source of aesthetic water quality problems and the most cost-effective solutions. The Water Mains Rehabilitation Manual recommends a two-tier approach to planning and investigation of any distribution system. The first tier involves strategic steps and the second tier relates to specific zonal investigations and planning. The zonal investigations comprise a four-stage approach: downstream series sampling, filter survey, hydrant flushing, and internal inspection. Remedial actions include cleaning and flushing as well as cement mortar lining and novel online replacement techniques. A table lists water quality trends and possible causes.
