Compagnie Generale des Eaux is the lease-hold contractor of the Ile de France water board, covering 144 boroughs in the Paris suburbs. Although the integrity of the network is over 90 percent, it appears that the risk of leak occurrence may be increased in particular due to frequent road works in the vicinity of the mains, vibrations due to traffic, or the harmful effect of slow clearing salts. The first step in a monitoring program is to classify sensitive sites. Acoustic monitoring (correlation), previous used for mobile detection and locating, had not been tested as an on-stream monitoring technique. This paper explains the principles of acoustic monitoring in this use, and development of a study to explore the usefulness of acoustic monitoring for this purpose, as well as how the results are used in the company's monitoring program.
