As with all pressure pipe materials, ductile iron must be used in a controlled manner in appropriate circumstances. It has many advantages and, thirty years ago, it was considered to be strong, robust and resistant to corrosion; an ideal material for water mains and fittings. It is still regarded as strong and robust but its resistance to corrosion is in question. This has been addressed by the industry in general, and the manufacturers now produce pipes with zinc coating and, furthermore, it is normally recommended in the UK to supplement this with PE sleeving. We now know how ductile iron pipes should be protected and installed, but what about the pipes already in use? How do we deal with corrosion of ductile iron pipes already in the ground? This paper suggests possible practical methods to retard corrosion of existing ductile iron mains utilizing modified cathodic protection (CP) techniques.
