The answer to a cost-effective and customer-oriented utility replacement program is the use of trenchless technology for installation of new cable, pipe, or conduit. Trenchless technology is an all-encompassing term that describes a method of underground utility placement without extensive surface disturbance. Trenchless technology for the placement of underground utilities include pneumatic, hydraulic, and fluid methods. The focus of this paper is on those methods applicable to the placement of water and sewer systems. Each of these methods has a niche in the market with specific advantages related to its individual capabilities. Some of the different technologies described are: impact moling; wet/slurry boring; and fluidjet systems.
