The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) is in the fourth year of a $1.7billion Capital Improvement Program to bring critical new water treatment andtransmission facilities to the Las Vegas Valley. These new facilities includeover 80 miles of pipelines and tunnels, 9 rate of flow control station, 12pumping stations, 6 water storage reservoirs, a 150 million gallon per day watertreatment facility, and a new raw water intake structure near the bottom of LakeMead. A new power supply system to operate the new facilities is also beingconstructed for SNWA by the Colorado River Commission. These facilities are beingconstructed on lands managed by the National Park Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and Bureau of Land Management, as well as local government and privateindividuals. From its inception, the SNWA has had a strong commitment to preserveand protect the environment. Meeting that commitment while constructing a projectwhich disturbs approximately 2,500 area of federal and non-federal lands has beena challenge that the SNWA has met by coordinating closely with federal, state, and local agencies. This paper describes SNWA's planning and construction effortswith regard to its Capital Improvement Program.
