This paper summarizes some of the key issues being addressed by the Telecommunications Technical Advisory Workgroup (TAW) and discusses their potential impact on water utility operations. The TAW was formed in 1996 to deal with the new competitive landscape of radio spectrum resources, and to research and address related regulatory issues. The explosion of demands for wireless telecommunications services has changed the landscape of radio spectrum allocation. Topics discussed include: threats to existing spectrum; radio spectrum implications to utilities; and, the specific action that the TAW has taken to research and address regulatory issues related to water utilities' access to radio spectrum.
