Recent advances in artificial intelligence modeling techniques have allowed forthe development of models of complex non-linear processes. In the water treatmentindustry, such models have fostered a greater understanding of otherwise poorlyunderstood unit processes. This paper briefly discusses the development ofartificial neural network (ANN) models for the removal of turbidity and color byenhanced coagulation. More importantly, innovative applications of these modelsin online and offline methods of indirect process control are discussed. Whenused in enhanced coagulation process control, the models offer a method ofdetermining the appropriate operating conditions for the entire spectrum of rawwater conditions. Includes 13 references, tables, figures.
