Spreadsheets such as Excel and Lotus have enjoyed a tremendous amount ofpopularity in the water industry. To enhance spreadsheet capabilities, add-ins orsupplemental programs are developed and integrated into the spreadsheets by usersor specialized third-party vendors. This paper discusses the efforts of theMetropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC) to incorporatecommercially available add-ins as optimization tools (linear programming,non-linear programming and genetic algorithms), with spreadsheet models used fordistribution system planning and scheduling.
