Many utilities are faced with shrinking budgets and increasing responsibilities.Automation has been used to minimize increases in facility staff, substitutingcapital costs for long term operating costs. While this trend has kept the numberof utility staff lower than might otherwise have been necessary, it has alsorequired a better trained staff and access to more complex information in supportof this technology. Fortunately, organizations that improve operating efficiencythrough automation are usually comfortable using microcomputers for optimizinginformation access. Since 1995, information delivered via the Internet hasevolved to become one of the world's primary information delivery mediums.Intranets, or the use of Internet tools within the private network of anorganization, now make it possible to access information quickly and cheaply. This paper examines the various types of information that can be accessed via anIntranet, how this information can assist facility operators, and how it can makethem more productive.
