The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC) maintains andoperates a number of diverse, pilot-scale water treatment platforms to supportthe research efforts of the Water Quality Division. Until recently, each researchplatform used a unique supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. The original systems were either supplied by the research platform vendors orcustom-built by MWDSC staff. Because each system utilized a different userinterface, application development tool, or communication protocol, only alimited number of personnel possessed the familiarity and ability to make rapidchanges in the systems. Many of the systems had been assembled and programmedyears earlier and could no longer be efficiently maintained because ofaccelerated technological evolution and a lack of adequate documentation. Thispaper describes MWDSC's efforts to upgrade and standardize the SCADA systemsassociated with the research platforms. Issues concerning system planning, design, implementation, ease of use, and cost are discussed. Includes tables.
