The role of today's water distribution system engineer and manager is rapidlychanging. A wealth of sophisticated digital data sources, desktop geographicinformation systems (GIS) and database tools, and new distribution systemmodeling packages have provided the opportunity to not only conduct work fasterbut, more importantly, to provide more accurate and insightful information forcritical decision making. A fundamental challenge for effective use of digitaldata is proficiency in managing, processing, and interpreting large amounts ofavailable data. This paper discusses how new information technologies have beenapplied to managing large data sets on complex infrastructure engineeringplanning studies and the benefits realized. The paper focuses on processingdetailed metered sales data, determining water use rates and demand projections,and allocating demands to a complex water distribution system hydraulic model.
