The recent Disinfection/Disinfectants Byproducts (D/DBP) rule may potentially limit each individual species of trihalomethane (THM) compounds in distribution systems due to the different health risks associated with each. Current models of THMs are predicated on empirical reaction kinetic equations derived from linear and nonlinear multi-regression analysis. In systems with more than one source where waters of different qualities are blended, these models are no longer valid. This paper discusses research conducted to develop a nonlinear optimization approach to the characterization and modeling of THM species kinetics. The approach combines site-specific trends with stoichiometric expressions based on an average representative bromine content factor. The results were evaluated, tested and validated using data from finished desalinated water collected in the City of Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates. The paper also discusses the second stage of the research which employs the event-driven approach in modeling substances required in estimating and simulating the four species of THM in distribution systems. This model was tested and verified against data collected from the distribution system of the City of Abu-dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Includes 14 references, figures.
