Thames Water is one of Britain's largest water and wastewater companies, serving 12 million customers in London and across the Thames Valley. The River Thames catchment, with London at it's mouth, is one of the most intensively used water resource systems in the world. With demand increasing, strict water extraction regulations and a recent history of below average rainfall, managing leakage inthe Thames region is one of the key methods by which Thames Water is securing future water supplies. One of the most effective means of targeting leakage detection resources is District Metering which monitors flows and pressures insmall cells of the distribution network. Thames Water will increase coverage of District Metering Areas from a base level of 13% in 1997 to 100% in mid 2000. This requires the installation of 2,800 new flow metering points over a two and a half year period. This paper describes the innovative flow metering solution developed to satisfy this fast track program, and some of the challenges faced during the implementation of the project. The paper also briefly discusses plans for future development. Includes figures.
